City Hall pact blocks Sinn Féin from Mayoralty

26 May, 2005

Commenting on speculation that Belfast City Council will tonight elect a DUP Mayor and SDLP Deputy Mayor, Upper Falls Sinn Fein councillor and Sinn Fein group leader on Belfast City Council, Paul Maskey said:

"From the indicators available it would seem that a pact has been put in place involving the DUP, SDLP and Alliance Party that has been designed to exclude Sinn Fein from mayoralty in Belfast.

"This will disappoint the many citizens of Belfast who believed that with the election some time back of Alex Maskey as Lord Mayor, Belfast City Council had abandoned the failed politics of exclusion and had moved into a new era of fair play and equality.

"Sinn Fein remains the largest party in Belfast in terms of votes secured at the last election. This must be reflected in the allocation of senior positions at City Hall.

" Sinn Fein will strenuously oppose any squalid cross party arrangement geared toward denying democratic rights to our party and electors." ENDS
