The referendum proposals have been published - its now time to set the date
Speaking following the publication of the government‚s referendum proposals Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has said "Now that the proposals have been published, it's time for the government to set the date for the referendum".
Ms. McDonald said:
"Now that the proposals have been published, it‚s time for the government to set the date for the referendum on the EU Constitution. Sinn Féin is calling for the referendum to be put before the people this Autumn.
"It is important that there is an honest and open debate on this issue. I welcome this afternoon's comments from the Minister for European Affairs Noel Treacy that he is 'conscious of the need to ensure that citizens are well informed about the EU Constitution and what it means for Ireland'. But it is a pity that he refused an invitation to debate Sinn Féin on the matter at a conference on the Constitution in Dublin this weekend, a debate that could have been very informative for the electorate.
"The government needs to set out how they intend to conduct the debate on this referendum. People have different views regarding the future direction of the EU and that needs to be reflected. Previous referenda have highlighted the serious inadequacies of the Referendum Commission and these need to be addressed immediately, in consultation with other parties."ENDS
