Sinn Féin are standing up for Post Offices – McDonald
Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has insisted that Sinn Féin will oppose outright any attempt by the government to shut down Post Offices. Deputy McDonald recently launched a campaign, ‘Standing up for our Post Offices’.
Speaking tonight at a public meeting in East Wall which was also addressed by the General Secretary of the Postmasters Union, Ned O'Hara, the Dublin Central TD said:
“Two hundred and twenty two Post Offices have closed over the past ten years forcing the removal of essential services for local communities. The government has delayed implementing recommendations made around improving the efficiency of Post Offices. This has sparked real concern across communities that more Post Offices will be targeted for closure.”
Chairing the public meeting, Sinn Féin Councillor for Dublin’s North Inner City Gaye Fagan said:
“Sinn Féin recognise the important role of Post Offices to local communities, particularly how valued they are by our older citizens. We also support efforts to extend the variety of services being offered by Post Offices. The government need to immediately devise a viable long-term strategy to support them. Sinn Féin will oppose any attempt to shut down Post Offices or reduce their services.”
