Sinn Féin National Elected Representatives Forum
Sinn Féin will hold a National Elected Representatives Forum conference of tomorrow, Saturday 28th May, in the Sinn Féin Gulladuff Centre in South Derry. The conference will deal with the election of new councillors and MPs in the May 5th elections, the financial cuts facing the Education Library Boards, the impact of electoral legislation on the shredding of the electoral register, opposition to water charging, the programme of work in advancing the all-Ireland agenda and the implementation of Sinn Féin manifesto commitments.
Speaking ahead of the National Elected Representatives Forum conference Alex Maskey said:
"It is clear that throughout the Six Counties one of the biggest issues following the May 5th election is the shredding of the electoral register as a result of electoral legislation. Sinn Féin have won the argument on the shredding of the electoral register and secured the democratic rights of voters across every constituency.
"The British government has brought forward some changes particularly in the issue of rolling registration. However much more is required. The British government and particularly senior members of the British Labour government recognise how hugely damaging this legislation has been to the democratic process.
"The British government need to bring forward changes to the legislation and particularly to address the problem of large numbers being unable to vote because of problems with photographic ID." ENDS
