Gerry Adams TD welcomes publication of Coveney's position on Irish Unity
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has this afternoon welcomed the publication of Minister Simon Coveney's position on Irish Unity and he said that Minister Varadkar should now follow suit.
Teachta Adams said;
"I welcome the publication Minister Coveney's position on Irish Unity.
"It is important that Minister Varadkar also outlines his position.
"In April, I wrote to the leaders of all political parties in the Oireachtas seeking their support for the establishment of an Oireachtas Committee on Irish Unity.
"I outlined how the function of such a committee would be to bring forward proposals for what a United Ireland might look like, how we get there and how the Irish State needs to plan for reunification across all areas of the economy and society.
"I have also said that a referendum on Irish Unity should be held within the next five years.
"We need to give special attention to how we might convince Unionists of the benefits of unity.
"The cause of uniting Ireland is not the property of any one grouping or party.
"It is crucial that we leave party political and electoral interests at the door and embrace the idea of a broad consensus and civic movement for Irish Unity.
"Anybody who occupies the office of An Taoiseach should play an active and enthusiastic role in persuading and planning for Irish reunification."
