O’Neill to meet Chief Constable on UDA murders and criminality

30 May, 2017 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin Leader in the North Michelle O’Neill has requested an urgent meeting with PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton to discuss recent murders and ongoing UDA criminality following the killing of Colin Horner by a UDA faction.

And the Mid Ulster MLA has repeated her call to the leaders of the DUP and the UUP to be unequivocal in calling for the UDA to disband.

Michelle O’Neill said:

“Sunday’s brutal murder of Colin Horner follows the UDA murders of Brian McIlhagga in 2015, John Boreland in 2016 and George Gilmore.

“The PSNI need to do all in its power to wind up the UDA and other armed gangs, which have been involved in murder, pipe bombings, intimidation, arson, drug dealing and extortion over recent years.

“I will be asking the Chief Constable what action the police are taking to tackle this gangsterism and reassure society that it is doing all in its power to tackle these groups.

"There is also a responsibility on all of us in political leadership to challenge the very existence of these groups

“Political unionism has so far failed to step up to the plate in facing down violent loyalist extremism.

“It is nearly 20 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and the political leadership of unionism, the DUP and UUP should be unequivocal in calling for the UDA to disband immediately.”
