Sinn Féin Welcomes Asylum Worker Rights Ruling - Cullinane
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Workers' Rights David Cullinane TD has today welcomed the supreme Court ruling that says that the government's blanket ban on asylum seekers working is unconstitutional.
Teachta Cullinane said:
"This is a case that should never have gone to court.
“The Government refused to accept that the absolute prohibition on seeking employment for asylum seekers was contrary to the constitutional right to seek employment and fought tooth and nail to deny people that right.
"I welcome the ruling to adjourn the matter for six months in order to allow the Dáil to consider how to address the situation.
"This is also an opportunity to analyse the entire direct provision system and the way it operates.
"We have seen from the Public Accounts Committee that direct provision is big business for private operators.
"It is time to put in place a new system that respects human dignity and the right to work."
