Medical Consultant Tax Evasion ‘a blot on our Health System’ – Cullinane
Sinn Féin TD and member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane said today that the news of hundreds of medical consultants engaged in tax evasion at a cost of tens of millions of euro is “a slap in the face to our public health system”.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“It is incredible that over 400 medical consultants, who use all the public resources of our health system, have been found to have used sophisticated tax structures in order to avoid paying their fair share.
“By doing so, they were actively adding to the funding crisis in our health system; the very system that provides them with a living.
“The Public Accounts Committee heard today of the methods by which medical consultants used incorporation to funnel income into de facto shell companies.
“They did this while operating private practices in public hospitals, and worse they made fraudulent expense claims to further reduce liability.
“This shocking behaviour is treated with a shrug by government ministers.
“It is galling to see medical consultants who utilise the public sector actively avoiding paying into the very system that keeps them going.
“We need fair and progressive taxation in order to build fair and progressive social services.”
