Alex Maskey visiting Messines memorial sites
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey is visiting First World War memorial sites in Messines today to remember those from Ireland killed there 100 years ago.
Speaking from Messines today, Alex Maskey said:
"The First World War is an important part of the shared history we have on the island of Ireland.
"One hundred years ago men from across the island died in Messines in the slaughter of that war.
"It is important that all of us recognise and understand our past and that is why I, like a number of Sinn Féin representatives over the last decade, am visiting the memorial sites in Messines today.
"As republicans we regard the First World War as an imperialist slaughter but I recognise its importance to a large section of our community and acknowledge the suffering and loss of the First World War.
"Everyone has a right to remember their dead in a respectful, dignified and inclusive manner."
