8 June, 2017 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has welcomed the news that anti-Brexit community organisation Border Communities Against Brexit is to be awarded the European Parliament Citizen's Prize. The organisation was nominated for the award by Carthy and his fellow Sinn Féin MEPs Martina Anderson, Lynn Boylan & Liadh Ní Riada and by independent MEPs Nessa Childers & Marian Harkin.Matt Carthy said:"The news that Border Communities Against Brexit have won the European Citizen's Award 2017 is a fantastic endorsement of the great work carried out by BCAB and the communities it represents.  The presentation of the award will also provide another great opportunity to highlight Irish concerns regarding Brexit at an international level.“Border Communities Against Brexit have played a key role in opposing British Tory determination to drag the North of Ireland out of the EU against the democratically expressed wishes of the people there. They have been instrumental in bringing together the key sectors that will be negatively impacted by any Brexit induced hardening of the Irish border - businesses, workers, farmers and civic society."Sinn Féin’s MEPs were pleased to be joined by two independent colleagues in nominating BCAB for the citizens prize given its role in providing a voice to communities on both sides of the Irish border who will be adversely affected by Brexit.“That they have now been awarded the EU Citizen's Prize is an important recognition of the hard work and dedication of Border Communities Against Brexit in defending democracy and the interests of Irish border communities."Sinn Féin will continue to support the work of Border Communities Against Brexit and to work with them to ensure that the North of Ireland as secures designated special status within the European Union."ENDS
