Government delay in publishing fire report ‘unacceptable’ – Ó Broin
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has said that the government delay in publishing the Department of Housing’s report into the fire at Milford Manor, Newbridge, Co. Kildare is unacceptable. In March 2015, six houses in the estate were destroyed by a fire in less than an hour. A subsequent engineers report commissioned by the residents detailed serious shortfalls in building and fire safety standards.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“In aftermath of this fire, then-Minister Alan Kelly announced that an independent review would be undertaken to develop a framework for general application to support owners and residents living in developments where concerns about fire safety arise.
“Last week, the Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy confirmed to me in a PQ response that: ‘an independent fire safety expert has completed his review and a report on the matter has been received by my Department’.
“The question is now why is the Department dragging its feet on the publication of this report? If it is ready and if it is an independent report, why is the Department of Housing sitting on the contents of this report? In the aftermath of the tragic fire in Grenfell Tower, the public has a right to know if this state’s building standards and fire compliance regime are up to scratch. I have sent in a freedom of information request to the Department demanding the release of this report.”

* To ask the Minister for Housing; Planning; Community and
Local Government the status of his department's report into the fire at Milford
Manor, Newbridge, County Kildare; the timeframe for finishing the report; the
expected recommendations; and the publication date of same.
- Eoin Ó Broin T.D.
In July 2015, the then Minister directed that a review be undertaken by an independent fire expert to develop a framework for general application, in the interest of supporting owners and residents living in developments where concerns regarding non-compliance with fire safety requirements arise. A steering group was convened to oversee the review.
The independent fire safety expert has completed his review and a report on the matter has been received by my Department. The report remains under consideration pending clarification of a number of issues at which point it is intended that the arrangements necessary for publication will be made.
