‘Decision time for DUP on equality’ – Murphy

29 June, 2017 - by Conor Murphy

It is time for the DUP to accept rights and equality at the centre of government, Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said.

Speaking from the Stormont negotiations, he commented: “We are disappointed that today’s Assembly sitting was postponed. This was at the request of the DUP.

“The DUP have not yet agreed to Acht na Gaeilge, the Bill of Rights, marriage equality, anti-sectarian measures and legacy issues.

“There was sufficient time for these matters to be agreed.

“All of these issues were identified by Martin McGuinness in his letter of resignation in January.

“The British Government must accept its responsibility for the failure to reach agreement to date. Its alliance with the DUP has deepened DUP intransigence and arrogance and emboldened its anti-rights, anti-equality agenda.

“That isn’t acceptable or sustainable.

“Sinn Féin wants to see the institutions restored but that must be on a credible and sustainable basis, with equality and respect at their core and commanding public confidence.

“It is make your mind up time for the DUP.”
