European Commission report a damning indictment of government taxation policy – Doherty
Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has described the latest post programme surveillance report from the European Commission as a damning indictment of the government’s taxation policy and said it is astonishing that the Taoiseach committed again to cutting taxes for the wealthiest just days after receiving the report.
Speaking today Teachta Doherty said;
“This report from the European Commission is a stark warning to the government to reverse its reckless tax cutting agenda. Yet, astonishingly, just days after receiving the report An Taoiseach was down in Dublin Castle re-committing his government to massive tax cuts for some of the wealthiest people in society.
“It is very worrying that the report suggests that the cost of last year’s cut to the USC may have been underestimated and that is something Minister Donohue should make a statement on.
“The report has also supports Sinn Féin’s arguments that the state’s dependence on corporation tax is a huge vulnerability and that the Help to Buy Scheme only served to inflate house prices.
“The reality is that this report is a damning indictment of the government’s taxation policy and that is something that the new Minister Paschal Donohue should address. I will certainly be raising the pertinent issues with him at the first opportunity.”
