DUP's reckless Brexit support exposed - O'Dowd
The DUP's recklessness in providing a blank Brexit cheque to the Tory government has been exposed by the EU Repeal Bill published today, Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson John O'Dowd has said.
The Upper Bann MLA was speaking after the British Government published the bill setting out how it intends to extricate itself from European law.
"The fact that the bill has been heavily criticised by both the Scottish and Welsh governments as a Westminster power grab demonstrates the foolishness of the DUP's decision to guarantee support for all Brexit legislation as part of their deal to prop up Theresa May's ailing government.
"That was an incredibly reckless thing to do. In return for cash, they guaranteed their support for legislation they hadn't yet seen and which we now know could have profound implications for any future Stormont Executive.
"There is no good news in this bill for us, just as there is no good way to remove the North of Ireland from the EU.
"Brexit will be catastrophic for Ireland. The EU's Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier has already set out clearly that a frictionless border is impossible outside the Customs Union or the Single European Market.
"There is no good way to remove the North of Ireland from the EU because it can't be done without undermining the Good Friday Agreement and the democratic will of the people here who voted to remain.
"What is required for the island of Ireland isn't legislation to repeal EU laws.
"What we require is the Irish Government prioritising within the Brexit negotiations the demand for the North to be granted designated status to remain in the EU.
"That is the only course of action which is consistent with existing legislation, existing agreements and the democratically expressed wishes of the majority here."
