DUP must show leadership on Bonfires - Maskey
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called on the DUP to show leadership on the issue of contentious and dangerous bonfires. The call follows a number of very mixed messages coming from the party on the issue.
“The DUP must show leadership on the issues of contentious and dangerous bonfires within the unionist and loyalist communities.
“Over the past days we have had mixed messages from the DUP over the burning of effigies and flags.
“On the one hand we have the burning of an effigy of Martin McGuinness being righty condemned by Arlene Foster while on the other hand we have the South Belfast MP Emma Pengelly justifying the burning of effigies and flags.
“Only last week the response from the DUP to the backing of an court injunction on four bonfire sites by Belfast City Council was not to admit publicly to backing this injunction. Instead they issued an inflammatory statement attacking Sinn Féin. This is not leadership.
“With the burning of effigies, poster and flags being addressed by the PSNI as hate crimes, the damage done to property across many bonfire sites amounting to a huge bill and the environmental and health and safety aspects that become more apparent each year Sinn Féin are ready to be part of any conversation on this issue.
“It is now time the DUP stopped with the mixed messages and took a proactive and positive approach to addressing dangerous and contentious bonfires.”
