Time for Commissioner O’Sullivan to go - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has said Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan should do the right thing and step down from her position.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire was speaking today after the Public Accounts Committee published a report on the handling of the irregularities at Templemore Garda College that revealed catastrophic failures on the part of the commissioner.
“This report must be the end of the road for Commissioner O’Sullivan. The report highlights catastrophic failures on her part including her failure to report irregularities to the Minister for Justice as she was required to do under Section 41 of the 2005 Garda Act.
“Commissioner O’Sullivan also wrote to the Comptroller and Auditor General on 31st of July 2015 telling him that there were no irregularities to report in respect of the accounts of An Garda Síochána, just four days after she says she became aware of the very significant irregularities at Templemore. As the Accounting officer of An Garda Síochana this was a failure of her statutory duty.
“All of this comes on top of many more crises within An Garda Síochána, and questions regarding the Commissioners actions.
“Commissioner O’Sullivan must do the right thing and step down from her position.
“If she does not, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar needs to tell her it is time to go.”
