Martin Kenny TD echoes Sinn Féin call for Garda Commissioner to go.
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan and South Donegal, Martin Kenny, said today that the report into financial irregularities uncovered in Templemore Garda College means that Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan can no longer remain in her post.
Deputy Kenny said:
“The report reveals repeated incidences of failures on the part of the Commissioner and garda management.“The Commissioner wrote to the Comptroller and Auditor General at the end of July 2015 telling him that there were no irregularities at Templemore College, having just been made aware four days earlier of serious irregularities.
"Neither did she inform the Minister for Justice about the issues, even though under the Garda Act of 2005, she is obliged to do so.
“Yesterday, the two Sinn Féin members on the Public Accounts Committee, Mary Lou McDonald and David Cullinane, called again for the Commissioner to go. I echo their call and look to the Taoiseach to do the right thing and call for her resignation.
“The problems within the Garda Siochána are not confined to Templemore. We have seen them all over the country and here in this constituency too.
“I do not have confidence in the current commissioner to carry out the comprehensive reform needed to transform the gardaí to the force that this country needs to protect law and order, in which the people can have confidence and in which the members of the force themselves will go about their duties in the knowledge that the Garda Siochána is being run properly, transparently and ethically.”
