Hazzard Welcomes End to Warrenpoint Waste Plant Proposals

20 July, 2017 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP has welcomed confirmation from ReGen Waste Ltd that it will withdraw its application for a hazardous waste plant in Warrenpoint Harbour.

The local South Down MP had been working with local residents and stakeholders concerned that any proposed facility on Carlingford Lough would have been hugely detrimental to the delicate ecosystem in the local area.

 Mr Hazzard said:

“I welcome the confirmation from ReGen management that they are no longer advancing plans for such a facility in Warrenpoint Harbour. This decision will be welcomed by all sections of society connected to Carlingford Lough and much further afield also.

“I want to thank all those community & environmental activists who campaigned to bring these proposals to such a conclusion. Their dedication and commitment to protect the sensitive environment surrounding Carlingford Lough is testament to the strength of character in our local area.

Mr Hazzard added:

“I also want to thank Warrenpoint Harbour Authority for taking a much welcomed, and public position on this proposal at such an early stage of the planning process. In illustrating so clearly that they value the health & wellbeing of the local area as well as the economic viability of the harbour they will have undoubtedly impressed very many local residents in Warrenpoint.”
