Tory pledges over Brexit starting to ring hollow - McAleer

21 July, 2017 - by Declan McAleer

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has said Tory pledges on agriculture are already beginning to ring hollow.

Declan McAleer said:

"Comments from Tory Minister Michael Gove on the future of European Union subsidies for farmers show that Tory pledges over Brexit are starting to ring hollow.

"Farmers work extremely hard and for long hours to provide high quality food at a low price for consumers. It's utterly contemptible to suggest that they are given money for nothing.

"The price farmers receive for their produce is less than the production cost. The removal of subsidy will drive up prices for the consumer.

"Removing the subsidy and placing huge tariffs on their produce will cripple the industry and have a devastating wider impact across rural communities.

"The best way to protect our vital agri-food industry is to secure special status for the North within the EU and Sinn Féin is working to build support for that across Europe."
