BREXIT: Taoiseach must tell British and EU that Special Status for the North is best solution for Ireland - Gerry Adams TD
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has called on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to tell the British Government and the EU Brexit negotiating team that the best solution for Ireland is for the North to be afforded Designated Special Status within the European Union.
Teachta Adams said;
"I welcome the strengthening of the Taoiseach's position that there should not be an economic border imposed on Ireland as a result of Britain's exit from the European Union and his assertion that the Irish government will not have any hand in designing such a border.
"There is an imperative on the Taoiseach, having set out his position, to follow it through with a strategy. This strategy should focus on winning maximum support across the island of Ireland and the EU for Designated Special Status for the North.
"The Taoiseach should should tell both the British Government and the EU negotiating team that this is the best solution to the economic, political and social challenges that Ireland faces from Brexit. Crucially, it would also uphold the vote of the people of the North to remain part of the European Union."
