Martin Kenny TD welcomes EU food pricing consultation
Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture, food and the marine Martin Kenny TD has today welcomed news that the European Commission is opening a consultation process on unfair trading practices in food production.
Deputy Kenny said:
“I have long argued that the primary producer, the farmer, is not well served by a system which is so lacking in transparency as food pricing.
“There is a need for price transparency across the EU and the way to achieve it is through EU legislation to protect the more vulnerable sections of the food chain, particularly farmers.
“This consultation process is to be welcomed and is an opportunity for stakeholders to express the need to make information about the prices at which processors sell the products they buy from farmers, freely available for all to see.
“I believe when this happens, the discrepancy between the profits (if any) made by farmers and the profits made by processors and retailers will be clear and measures can be taken to redress that imbalance.
“Sinn Féin support Irish farmers, their exceptional produce and it is only fair that they are paid accordingly.”
