Councillor Chris Curran welcomes new accommodation for Carrickmines fire survivors
Sinn Féin councillor for Sandyford Glencullen, Chris Curran has welcomed the completion of four new council provided accommodation units on the Glenamuck Road.
The units, were delivered under the Traveller Accommodation Scheme and expedited as a result of the Carrickmines Fire Disaster, in which 10 people lost their lives in October 2015.
Speaking today Councillor Curran said;
“Since the tragedy, the council acted as quickly as I believe possible to provide both temporary and permanent accommodation to the survivors. However, it shouldn’t have taken the deaths of ten people to bring this about.
“Next year will see a review of traveller accommodation across the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown council area and it will be my intention to ensure that the same level of proactive commitment is invested in the delivery of the works from that review.
“There are still some areas of support where the state has yet to fulfil its commitment to the survivors of the tragedy. I am calling on the ministers for Social Protection and Children to adopt a more helpful approach to deal with the outstanding supports required by the survivors.
“On behalf of Sinn Féin and many who know the family, I wish them every happiness in their new homes. I would also like to thank all those involved in the delivery of the project.”
