John Bruton’s abstentionism comments are nothing more than a distraction - David Cullinane TD
Responding to a call from former Taoiseach John Bruton today for Sinn Féin to take its seats in Westminster Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson David Cullinane TD said his party will not break its commitment to its voters and said the government must argue strongly for designated special status within the EU for the North of Ireland.
Speaking today Teachta Cullinane said;
“Unlike other parties Sinn Féin understands its mandate and we will not be breaking our commitment to our voters.
“The Nationalist people in the North have overwhelmingly turned their backs on Westminster and voted for an All Ireland approach. That vote should be respected.
“The Tory party has already rejected the democratic wishes of the people in the North of Ireland and the people of Scotland who voted against Brexit. It will not change course in government.
“The reality is that imposing an EU frontier on the island of Ireland will be detrimental to all the people, our economy and our agreements. The Irish Government must adopt and secure the position endorsed by the Dáil for the North to be designated special status within the EU.”
