Flynn welcomes intervention by health authorities

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has welcomed an intervention by health authorities to assist women experiencing complications following vaginal mesh surgery.
The West Belfast MLA said:
“This is a welcome intervention by health authorities including the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) who wrote to alert GPs to the emerging prevalence of women experiencing complications following vaginal mesh surgery and to signpost the way forward in terms of women receiving more prompt assessment.
“The HSCB has recognised that current research and reviews may not reflect the actual rate of serious complication, and that is to be welcomed as well.
“My party colleague Caoimhe Archibald and I held a meeting recently with representatives from a group of women experiencing serious, life changing complications, including chronic pain, organ erosion and loss of mobility.
“The group’s main concern was the difficulty women in this situation are finding in accessing assessment, treatment and care and to warn other women who may not be told of the recent 'high risk' classification of these procedures.
"The physical and emotional pain that the women affected have had to endure is terrible and it is important that their health and wellbeing needs are met as a matter of urgency."
