Families impacted by pyrite ‘need more support’ – O’Reilly
Sinn Féin TD for Fingal Louise O’Reilly has today welcomed the NSAI publication of the revised standards for homes impacted by pyrite. Speaking today, Teachta O’Reilly said:
“While we welcome any measure which seeks to improve the possibility of home owners with pyrite affected homes being able to sell their property, the fact remains that, even if the government adopt these standards, it will not help most of the families with pyrite affected homes.
“Home owners in North County Dublin with pyrite need more support from the government. In particular, there needs to be help for those who need to carry out survey work and for those who are living in blocks with pyrite damage.
“It makes sense for these homes to be remediated en masse, but there is, at present, no provision for this. Likewise, there is no financial support for those families who carry out tests but whose homes are not sufficiently damaged to warrant inclusion in the remediation scheme.
“Owners of homes with pyrite in North County Dublin have seen recently that, while pyrite has had a huge impact on their lives and the lives of their families, the developer responsible for building some of the houses impacted is set to build more houses on their doorstep. It is unfair that, while they are still dealing with the impact of pyrite, those responsible are apparently back in business.”
