Ó Donnghaile backs demand for Irish Language act at Hillsborough
An Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile was at Hillsborough Castle today in support of Irish language campaigning group An Dream Dearg who handed in a letter to British Secretary of State James Brokenshire demanding an Acht Gaeilge.
Niall Ó Donnghaile said that James Brokenshire and the British government have failed to honour its commitment to an Irish Language Act.
Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“The British government gave a commitment in the St Andrew’s Agreement, more than ten years ago to bring forward an Irish Language Act.
“They have failed to honour that obligation.
“We need a standalone Irish Language Act which is fit for purpose.
“It’s time for legislation, which protects the rights of Irish language speakers.
“I commend the Irish language community for their campaign which will continue until we see an end to the denial of rights enjoyed by citizens right across these islands.”
