Kelly critical at delay in Girdwood Barracks consultation

16 June, 2005

Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Belfast Gerry Kelly has criticised the decision of DSD to postpone a consultation into the future use of the former Girdwood military base until January 2006.

Mr Kelly said:

"The DSD have indicated that the consultation into the future use of the former Girdwood military base will not commence until January 2006. This is unacceptable and an unnecessary delay in completing this process.

"The consultation process needs to start immediately and to be complete by the end of this year when the site will have been finally cleared and ready for development. There is no sense in delaying the start of consultation process until after the site has been cleared.

"The site will provide 26 acres of land in the middle of North Belfast and needs to be handed back to the local community. This requires a comprehensive strategy which is time framed and developed with full input from the surrounding community. There is a housing crisis in this area and there has been no easily accessible leisure provision for nationalists in that part of the city for over a generation.

"I am eager that progress is made swiftly in redeveloping this site and using this land to benefit the wider North Belfast community." ENDS
