'Sinn Féin won't pick up on SDLP failures' - Hazzard
Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has dismissed the latest call from SDLP leader Colum Eastwood urging republicans to renege on their election pledge not to take seats in the British Parliament.
"Election pledges may not mean much to the SDLP but they do to Sinn Féin," the South Down MP commented.
"Sinn Féin stood on an active abstentionist ticket in the Westminster election and were overwhelmingly endorsed by the nationalist electorate.
"The SDLP lost all its seats after failing to produce a single example of substance to sustain their claim of making a difference by sitting in the British Parliament.
"They are now asking Sinn Féin to pick up their failures where they left off.
"However, we have no intention of abandoning our commitment to an electorate which has clearly turned its back on Westminster. An electorate which realises that, whatever the arithmetic, the solutions to Brexit will not be found on the green benches of Westminster but on the island of Ireland.
"Sinn Féin's seven MPs will join our 30 Sinn Féin TDs and Seanadóirí, 27 MLAs and four MEPs as we continue to energetically represent citizens on an all-Ireland basis to seek special status for the North to remain in the EU in line with the wishes of the people."
