Minister Halligan must act to fix broke school transport system - Pat Buckley TD
Sinn Féin TD for Cork East Pat Buckley has called on the Minister John Halligan to act immediately to rectify serious problems in the School Transport Scheme which he had been alerted to by Sinn Féin earlier this year. Buckley went on to describe the system as a shambles which was failing hundreds of families.
Deputy Buckley said:
"Hundreds of parents across the State and many in Cork have been disappointed by the system which has failed to provide an appropriate place for their child"
"A lack of a seat on the school bus for these children is a major problem for their parents and their education. A lot of parents I have spoken to do not have the ability to provide or pay for alternative transport.
"One case I dealt with which was requesting a seat for a very badly bullied student who had to change schools and needed to be placed on a new route. Despite confirmation of the bullying by the school and even Gardaí, this was denied.
"Last weekend it emerged that over 2,000 children are either still waiting for a seat to be confirmed or had been refused. This incredibly slow processing which has resulted in hundreds of families without a place for their children is totally unacceptable and the blame falls squarely with the Minister who was aware of the problems and failed to act.
"Young people returning to school deserve better as do their families.
