Newscastle & Rathcoole biosolid plant decision ‘a victory for common sense’ - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin has welcomed the decision by Irish Water not to locate a biosolid plant in Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“Today Irish Water announced their preferred location for the development of a biosolid plant for the greater Dublin region. Thankfully the site in Greenogue, Rathcoole, which had been on their shortlist was not chosen.
“Earlier this year, I made a submission to Irish Water strongly objecting to plans for a regional biosolids storage facility in Greenogue.
“I understand that there was a large volume of objections from community and business interests in the Newcastle and Rathcoole areas.
“This site was clearly unsuitable for such a project. Irish Water clearly did not take into account a number of important criteria when drawing up its shortlist of locations for such a facility.
“The proposed site is located too close to the villages of Rathcoole and Newcastle. This is a large residential area and the residents and local businesses there would be negatively impacted by the odour coming from such a facility.
“The submission outlines a number of other issues with the site. These include planning issues, the risk to the environment and the potential impact of such a facility on local food processing plants.
“Thankfully Irish Water has listened to the genuine concerns of local people and are no longer considering this site. This is a victory for common sense and good planning.”
