McGuinness challenges unionist politicians over Magherafelt flags

17 June, 2005

Sinn Féin MP for Mid-Ulster Martin McGuinness has called on unionist politicians and community leaders in Magherafelt to ensure that union flags are removed from the town centre.

Mr McGuinness said:

"Over the past week Magherafelt town centre has been bedecked in unionist flags and bunting. My office has been inundated with complaints by local residents and business people angry at this sectarian display.

"People have a right to live free from fear and sectarian intimidation but the flags and bunting is having exactly this effect and many would contend that this is the purpose behind this display.

"Unionists political and community leaders have a responsibility to tackle this problem and to show civic leadership. It is unacceptable for any unionist politician to stand idly by and let this blatant sectarian intimidation continue unchallenged." ENDS
