Fianna Fáil must follow through on call for Garda Commissioner to go

6 September, 2017 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Fein Justice Spokesperson, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has responded to the news that Fianna Fáil have called on the Government to take action to remove Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan.

Speaking this afternoon Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

“Sinn Féin has been of the view for a long time that the Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan is not a suitable person to lead the Garda Síochánathrough the reforms it so badly needs. I am glad that Fianna Fail have belatedly been convinced of this, and come out of the Governments pocket on this issue.

“In truth, Fianna Fails position is hypocritical to say the least. Fianna Fail have protected the Garda Commissioners position for far too long.

“The simple fact is, the main reason that she is still in place, is the fact that Fianna fail has kept her there.

“As recently as May, Sinn Féin tabled a motion of no confidence in the Commissioner. This came against a background of controversy after controversy, including the Templemore Finances debacle, the penalty points scandal, the undermining of whistleblowers, and now that the scale of false breath tests is even more outrageous than we thought.

“Given the seriousness of these previous scandals, it is difficult to comprehend why this scandal has been one scandal too much for Fianna Fail.

“Fianna Fail are performing olympic levels of verbal gymnastics once again. It is welcome that they have finally seen sense, however, it is now essential that this is backed up by action, and that this isn’t just more hand wringing. We will bring this to the floor of the Dáil once again, Fianna Fáil need to support us. Commissioner O’Sullivan needs to go.”
