Dublin MEP participates in 'national day of action against racism'

18 June, 2005

Sinn Féin National Chairperson and MEP for Dublin will join with thousands of people this lunchtime to participate in a demonstration to mark the National Day of Action Against Racism. The demonstration, supported by groups from across all 32 Counties will begin at the GPO on O'Connell Street at 12.30pm.

Speaking this morning Ms McDonald said:

"It is the responsibility of every Irish citizen to challenge racism, from wherever it emanates. It is too important an issue to leave to this government. In particular, Michael McDowell, the Minister for Injustice cannot be this state‚s first line of defence against inequality - because the Minister believes passionately in inequality.

"Recent racist comments by Minister Lenihan about Turkish workers are an indication of how far we all have to travel before we become a truly inclusive society.

"I want to reiterate recent calls from my party colleagues for all the political parties to educate their membership from top to bottom about the obligations we are all under having signed up to the Anti-Racism Protocol for Political Parties, and also to enforce the obligations through disciplinary procedure.

"I want to welcome today‚s demonstration as a sign of solidarity with the different ethnic groups who live in Ireland, including the Travelling Community. I am particularly heartened by the fact that today's demonstration has been organised on an all-Ireland basis. Sinn Féin is committed to fighting this scourge on an all-Ireland level."ENDS
