Taoiseach out of sync with public opinion on Garda reform - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

8 September, 2017 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has responded to reports this morning regarding the Gardaí's inability to hand over vital information required by the CSO to publish crime figures.

The Cork South Central TD said this failure by An Garda Síochana was further evidence of a force in need of radical reform.

Speaking this morning, Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

"The delay in the providing of homicide figures due for reviews is unacceptable. This is the second delay after the issue was highlighted in June of this year.

"It is notable that the CSO state that they do not expect the reviews to be completed, and for figures to be provided to them any time in the near future.

"Simply put; the coordination, organisation, and efficiency at the highest levels of an Garda Síochana is nothing short of farcical.

"It was only on Tuesday morning that it emerged that there were an extra 500,000 false breath tests declared to have taken place, and that the opposition, called for the resignation of Nóirín O'Sullivan. There is little confidence among the public as a whole in her.

"The perception amongst the general public is of an organisation lacking basic competencies, and where accountability is at a minimum.

"The fact that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar declined to answer questions on the latest among a spate of scandals shows that he is running out of words to defend the Gardaí and Nóirín O'Sullivan.

"The Taoiseach must step in and act now if the Minister for Justice will not."
