New commissioner should come from outside this jurisdiction - Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has welcomed the retirement of Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan this evening.
Deputy Ó Laoghaire said the Policing Authority needs to be empowered to hire and fire commissioners and insisted that Commissioner O’Sullivan’s replacement should come from outside the jurisdiction.
Speaking today Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
“”Public confidence in An Garda Síochána is at an all time low as the force is engulfed with controversy after controversy and the government continually failed to act.
“The vast majority of Gardaí are held in high regard by the public and are committed and dedicated public servants. However, the spate of recent controversies has seriously damaged morale.
“Commissioner O’Sullivan’s retirement, while long overdue, is welcome and I want to wish her well for the future.
“It is important now that the government realises that this is an opportunity to begin the process of restoring confidence in An Garda Síochána.
“That must begin with the getting the right person to replace Commissioner O’Sullivan and Sinn Féin believes that it should be somebody from outside the jurisdiction and has no connection to the current and ongoing controversies.
“We further believe that the Policing Authority must be empowered to recruit a commissioner and to recommend the removal of a commissioner.
“Ultimately we need a government that is not prepared to stand over major controversies and is committed to proper reform of An Garda Síochána.”
