Gerry Adams MP and relatives of suicide victims to meet with Shaun Woodward
Gerry Adams MP for West Belfast will join a delegation of families whose loved ones have died as a result of suicide, to meet with NIO Minister Shaun Woodward tomorrow, Monday (20.06.05).
The delegation will meet with Mr Woodward at 8.30am at Glendenning House, Murray Street, in Belfast City Centre (Glendenning House is situated between Jury's Hotel and Inst school).
Speaking today Mr Adams said:
"Today's meeting presents the families with an opportunity to ask Mr Woodward to clarify his recent comments. His recent comments regarding suicide in the north of Ireland are misinformed and ill-advised. There is huge under-funding of mental health services in the north of Ireland.
"Even Mr Woodward's predecessor, Angela Smith accepted that this shortfall in mental health resources is most pronounced in west and north Belfast where it has run into millions of pounds over many years. Prevailing socio-economic deprivation in these areas not only exacerbates this funding inequality but also increase mental health needs." ENDS
