Juncker’s Power Grab will not wash – Cullinane

13 September, 2017 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit and EU Affairs David Cullinane TD said today that the Federalists in the EU cannot be allowed to use Brexit to build an EU army and finance ministry against the will of the people of Europe.

Deputy Cullinane said:

“European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker’s answer to the issues facing the EU is that it should just carry on doing the same only faster & with less democratic oversight.

“This is the exact opposite of what is required.

“There is a democratic deficit at the heart of the current EU project and nothing that Juncker has proposed today will change that.

“He wants an EU President, an EU Finance minister, and an EU army.

“He wants to change voting rights to qualified majority for trade deals and associated issues such as tax.

“President Juncker can spin this any way he wants but the reality is that this is an attempted political and legal power grab by the federalists, and they are using Brexit to justify it.

“The truth is that the EU needs more democracy, not more federalism.

“It cannot continue to function with a one-size-fits-all approach to monetary and fiscal policy.

“The social fracture caused by the imposed austerity of the fiscal rules cannot be solved by a tightening of those fiscal rules.

“The interests of Ireland, and the challenges it faces, will not be tackled through a lessening of our voice through federalism – a project that will benefit German and French financial and industrial interests above all.

“We need a voice to stand up to the EU federalists and Sinn Fein will continue to be that voice.”
