Lynn Boylan MEP questions decision to send Irish naval vessel to world’s biggest arms fair.
Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has questioned the decision to send the Irish naval vessel, the LÉ Samuel Beckett to the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair in London. DSEI is the world’s biggest arms fair, weapons systems on display at this event include nuclear weapon components and Israeli ‘battle tested’ weapons that have been used on Palestinians.
Speaking from Dublin, Lynn Boylan said;
“Ireland is supposed to be a neutral country. It is shocking that the Department of Defence considered it acceptable for the Irish defence forces to send one of its flagship vessels and crew to be displayed alongside weapons which have been tested on Palestinians, nuclear weapon components, and weapons systems which have been used by Saudi Arabia in human rights violations in Yemen.
“The arms industry has been responsible for fuelling conflicts around the globe, the DSEI event will be visited by delegations from countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the Philippines.
"The news that an Irish naval vessel would participate in this event raises serious questions regarding the government’s commitment to neutrality.
"I have written to the Minister for Defence asking him to clarify the grounds on which the LÉ Samuel Beckett was deployed"
