Pat Treanor elected Meara Chontae of Monaghan

21 June, 2005

Sinn Féin president, Gerry Adams, today congratulated party Councillor Pat Treanor on his election as An Meara Chontae (County Mayor) of Monaghan. Cllr. Treanor is only the second Sinn Féin member to hold the premier office of Monaghan County Council.

Speaking today Gerry Adams said:

"I want to congratulate Pat Treanor on his election as An Meara Chontae of Monaghan. Pat has been a committed party activist for many years and is currently the Sinn Féin National Organiser. It is a testament to the growth of Sinn Féin in County Monaghan (where we are now the largest party) that Pat was elected to this position with the unanimous support of the membership of Monaghan County Council.

"I have no doubt that Pat will serve the people of Monaghan with distinction and will campaign for better services for all the citizens of that county. I know that in particular Pat will focus on the full restoration and development of services at Monaghan General Hospital, the restoration of the Ulster Canal and the building of co-operation between Monaghan and its neighbouring counties of Fermanagh, Tyrone and Armagh. I wish him well for the coming year."ENDS
