SDCC welcome confirmation of Ibrahim Halawa’s innocence and imminent release – Fanning

25 September, 2017 - by Enda Fanning

South Dublin County Councillors have unanimously passed a motion welcoming local constituent Ibrahim Halawa’s imminent release from prison in Egypt.

Speaking after his motion was passed, Sinn Féin Councillor Enda Fanning said:

“We, as Ibrahim’s local Council, welcome the recent court verdict from Egypt that Ibrahim Halawa and his sisters are innocent of all charges. It has been over four long difficult years for Ibrahim and his family but now that he and his sisters have been found innocent, it is a time of tremendous relief for all.

“We recall that Ibrahim was arrested as a minor and incarcerated in Egyptian prisons, as an innocent person. While his sisters were released on bail, Ibrahim has been held in prison ever since. What has happened to Ibrahim is an injustice, but we now look forward to his safe return.

“As Ibrahim’s local councillor I want to wish Ibrahim and his family well and I look forward to welcoming him home, hopefully later this week. I also look forward to South Dublin County Council inviting Ibrahim to address this Council at a future date.”
