Lone parent report must influence Budget 2018 - John Brady TD

28 September, 2017 - by John Brady TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Social Protection John Brady TD has said that a soon to be published lone parent report must influence Budget 2018.

Speaking following a Social Protection Committee meeting this morning, Teachta Brady said:

“Last year, Sinn Féin secured an amendment to the Social Welfare Bill committing the Government to carry out an independent report into the impact, financial and otherwise, that changes to the One Parent Family Payment have had on lone parents.

“The Minister for Social Protection at the time Leo Varadkar committed to this report being published ahead of the Budget. This is absolutely necessary.

“This cannot be a report to sit on a shelf; action has to follow this report. This action must be taken in the Budget.

“I have no doubt that this report will tell us what most of us already know – the changes made to the cut off age of the One Parent Family Payment have been detrimental for lone parents.

“Today, the Minister confirmed that the lone parent report is days away from being published. This report is crucial for lone parents and their children and it must inform Budget 2018.”
