Government has lost control of the homeless crisis - Eoin Ó Broin TD

29 September, 2017 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD, commenting on the August homeless figures which show an increase in the number of families, single adults and children in emergency accommodation, has said that 'the Government has lost control of of the homeless crisis'.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“The government has lost control of the homeless crisis. Yet again we have the largest number of adults and children in emergency accommodation since Government started recording the figures.

“We now officially have over 3,000 children sleeping in emergency accommodation. The figures show 3,048 children, an increase in 75 from the previous month, are sleeping in B&Bs, hotels and hubs.

“The number of homeless families has increased to 1,442, a rise of thirteen and the number of homeless adults has climbed to 5,222.

“Despite all Minister Murphy’s media announcements nothing has changed. While there is a small drop in figures in Dublin, across the State the homelessness problem is growing.

“All the government’s summits and plans are not doing anything to help homeless families and children. Unless the Minster is prepared to adopt the measures necessary to keep more families in their homes, such as more protection for tenants in buy-to let properties, then the figures will just keep on rising.

“We must also remember that behind every statistic there is a person. There were 75 more children in August without a permanent home as they prepare to go back to school.

"We have to ask ourselves why do the TD’s who make up this government not care about this growing social crisis.”
