The post office network must be protected: Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan and South Donegal has expressed deep concern at the disclosure by the Irish Postmasters’ Union that An Post intends to reduce the number of post offices in the state to 700.

Deputy Kenny said:

“The Postmasters have written to their members claiming that An Post intends to close an additional 400 post offices reducing the current 1,100 to just 700 offices open in the state.

“Sinn Féin has supported the Postmasters in their fight to protect a universal postal service and maintain the standards of the postal service all over the state, not just in the cities.

“Any rural dweller will testify to the economic and social importance of a post office in the community. Garda stations, small schools and other services are gone, so keeping the post office network intact is more important than ever especially in isolated communities.

“The addition of services such as motor tax renewals, paying of commercial rates and receipt of government payments would protect the network and ensure access for all to the services.

“It is time for government to enter into meaningful negotiations with the Postmasters and An Post to resolve the situation where An Post seems intent on destroying the network and the Postmasters are appealing for support.

“Rural Ireland cannot take any more cuts to services, of which postal services are a vital part.”
