Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald today launched Sinn Féin’s fully costed women’s Budget 2018 document which contains a number of alternative social, economic and public administration proposals that could improve the lives of women and their families for generations to come if implemented by Government.
The Dublin Central TD said:
“Despite the progress of recent decades fundamental inequities remain for women and their families. Sinn Féin has produced this Budget 2018 document for women to highlight the alternative social and economic choices that can be made by Government.
“Sinn Féin is committed to economic policies that are rooted in social justice and to delivering prosperity for all. Be it access to social and affordable homes, tackling low pay, dealing with pension inequality or protecting women from domestic violence the people need political leadership that will deliver the policies and necessary resources.
“Sinn Féin’s Budget 2018 Standing Up for Women proposals include a number of fully costed proposals to tackle low pay and support household incomes; reshape and resource childcare; transform the health system; provide supports to women and their children escaping domestic violence; support Traveller women and their children; encourage alternative paths to work and progress gender proofing and equality budgeting across Government departments.
“Introducing a living wage across the civil service, increasing the minimum wage to €10 an hour, restoring pre-2012 pension bands and rates and increasing income supports such as FIS and the Carers Allowance are just some of the actions we would take to support low income households.
“We would increase funding for domestic violence refuge, step down and support services by €60m by 2021, reduce maximum financial contributions towards civil legal aid from €130 to €50 and instruct Tusla to collect figures for women and children using domestic violence accommodation refuges on a month by month basis for inclusion in the monthly Department of Housing homeless figures.
“Sinn Féin supports the National Women’s Council of Ireland recommendation that Government publish a Gender Equality Statement alongside Budget 2018. Sinn Féin would include this statement within a wider human rights and equality statement as advised by the Human Rights and Equality Commission.”
