An Post must publish reported plans for post office closures – Adams

2 October, 2017 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President and TD for Louth Gerry Adams has said that reported plans by An Post  to close up to 400 local post office branches, specifically in rural areas, could  have a huge impact in Louth if allowed to proceed.

A recent Irish Postmasters' Union (IPU) general meeting has seen postmasters ballot against the An Post blueprint which would result in the number of post offices being reduced from 1,100 to just 700.

Teachta Adams said:

“Pushing ahead with a plan to close up to 400 local post office branches in rural areas could level a devastating blow to rural parts of County Louth and indeed to rural Ireland as a whole.

“Closures of Garda Stations and small rural schools, lack of investment in infrastructure, and inadequate broadband service are all telling indictments of how little successive governments have done to rebuild rural Ireland.

“Our local Post Office branches provide an essential service for communities. An Post must publish its reported plans to close up to 400 post offices. Our local communities have a right to know whether their own post office could be one of those earmarked for closure.

“Sinn Féin stands with the Irish Postmasters and with rural communities in calling for our post offices to be protected.”
