Irish Government move to secure USA immigration deal ‘welcome’ – Ó Clochartaigh

3 October, 2017

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on the Diaspora, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, has welcomed reports that the Irish Government has started a serious effort to ensure that Irish immigrants to the United States and those there who need their situation regularised are catered for.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“It is being reported that in advance of expected new immigration reform measures being presented to the US Congress, that the Irish Government has begun a serious effort to secure a deal for Irish emigrants. This is welcome.

“Sinn Féin has for decades raised immigration reform with US Congress members, to try secure a better deal for Irish emigrants.

“Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney will travel to Washington D.C.  next week and I call on him to ensure the issues facing Irish emigrants living in the USA are to the top of his agenda. He should push for the regularisation of Irish undocumented citizens in the USA and look for more legal pathways for Irish emigrants to enter the USA.”
