Fight is on to protect the north from Brexit – Cullinane
Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane said today that the fight is on to ensure the north is protected from Brexit and that there is no return to a border on the island of Ireland.
The Waterford TD and Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson said:
David Cullinane said:
“We need a plan to protect the north and the people of the north from the Brexit decision that was not of their choosing.
“The north is a special and unique case and demands a special and unique solution.
“Sinn Féin believes that the north should be given special designated status within the EU.
“That means that the Good Friday Agreement must be protected in all its parts, we need to maintain the free movement of people on the island of Ireland and between Britain and Ireland and there has to be a completely open border on the island of Ireland.
“The rights of EU and non-EU nationals on the island of Ireland must be protected and we have to have continued direct access to the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights and access to EU funds and payments for the north of Ireland.
“The need to reform the EU has not gone away – but the fight now is to ensure the north is protected from Brexit and that there is no return to a border on the island of Ireland, and for that to happen the north has to remain in the EU.”
