British Government’s unwillingness to engage at the heart of Brexit deadlock – Adams
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has commented on the determination by Michel Barnier that insufficient progress has been made to allow Brexit negotiations to move to their next phase.
Teachta Adams said:
“The determination by Michel Barnier that the Brexit negotiations cannot move to the next phase was inevitable given the lack of willingness by the British government to engage substantially on the three key issues.
“There is a real danger that the current approach by the British government could lead to a scenario where no deal is reached.
“While every effort must be made to persuade the British government to engage properly, the Irish government must now urgently accept the need for the North to be designated a special status within the EU. This is only sure way of giving a measure of protection to both economies on this island.”
