Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin has said that Minister Murphy "has lost control of the homeless crisis." His comments come as news breaks of two deaths of people who were rough sleeping in Dublin and Drogheda. Deputy Ó Broin also offered his condolences to the family and friends of the men who passed away last night.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“While we do not yet know the full circumstances, one of the deceased was a rough sleeper who was sleeping in the streets of Templebar last night. The other was a young man who appears to have been rough sleeping in Drogheda.

"It is now clear that Minister Murphy has lost control of the homeless crisis. How many more people have to die before Government does what is needed to tackle this crisis?

"Minister Murphy must now make a public statement to outline what he plans to do to ensure that no more people die on our streets.

“He needs to ensure that there is an adequate supply of safe and secure emergency accommodation in those areas where it is needed. It is important that Government does not lose sight of single homeless people while responding to the family homeless crisis.

“Minister Murphy needs to increase the number of Housing First tenancies available those in emergency accommodation and must release additional funding for an ambitious programme of purchasing turn key properties in areas of high demand."
