Pat Buckley TD welcomes mediation process on Cork boundaries

25 October, 2017 - by Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Féin Cork East TD Pat Buckley has welcomed an agreement from the Chief Executive of Cork City Council Ann Doherty, and Cork County Council, Mr. Tim Lucey to begin a mediation process to develop a final line on the proposed Cork City boundary extension.

Teachta Buckley was responding to new that Ms Doherty had contacted  Mr Lucey on the matter.

Deputy Buckley continued;

"This development is a positive step and needed to happen. I welcome the move by Ms Doherty and Mr Lucey to begin the mediation process essential to resolving the long running issues caused by an out dated Cork city boundary.

"Cork city has long outgrown its 1965 boundary. However I believe that a merger of both the city and county councils would not be in the best interests of the city, the county and the peripheral areas.

"One issue which has not properly been discussed up to now is the possibility of changes to the city boundary. The boundary has never been drawn because there has been no dialogue on it. Now that dialogue can begin.

"The main issue is that it has to be brought forward on the basis of a two local authority model. Now that Cork City Council and Cork County Council will have to sit down together and have a meaningful discussion on this we must ensure that both councils are sustainable."
